Dear Ten Lives Club Supporter:
Spring finally arrived & we couldn’t be happier at the Ten Lives Clubhouse. Since November we have had to refill our propane tank to heat our shelter way too many times & it just about killed us financially. Since some of the 15 rooms we house our cats in did not have heat yet installed, we used electric heaters & our electric bill tripled to the four digits over the winter months. The next few months we will be concentrating on insulating the whole building so next winter will hopefully not be so costly. Keep in mind, like some organizations, we have no extra monies in the bank. We do not have the luxury of a big paid staff or bank accounts to fall back on should times get rough. We survive day to day & hope that every week we can juggle our bills. Some organizations have millions of dollars for a budget EVERY SINGLE YEAR to pay for their numerous staff, their programs & their perks. One million dollars, yes, one million dollars, would keep Ten Lives Club running for about ten years! Our yearly budget is small and we know what we need to make it all work & to continue on as a group. We are proud to say we are able to manage all we do on this tight budget yet are still able to do so much!
So many things are improving weekly at the Clubhouse. We should all be so proud of our progress. Without your help & support this could never have happened. So many of you reading this letter held the “vision” for all these years. Together we finally realized this shelter. We will be celebrating our one year anniversary in June. We hope you will be a part of it. WNY so needed this shelter; a place where older cats can have another chance at life, a place where sick cats can heal & a place where the strays or unwanted cats can have a new start. You, through your support, donations & kind words helped us get to this point. We would not have this shelter without everyone “holding the vision”. Remember, time will never run out at our Clubhouse for these cats. We know we have to make this Clubhouse work no matter what. The need we provide in the community & for the cats is so very important - we cannot by any means fail. We must make this shelter work & succeed.
This newsletter is brief because we wanted to announce our upcoming fundraisers & our next raffle to help us pay off our veterinary bills. We still owe a lot of monies to vets we have used in the past. It will be a monumental feat to once and for all pay our past bills off. We have our own vets on staff now at the shelter & by them being with us we save approximately $8,000 a month!!! We do all our surrenders at the Clubhouse & our own spaying and neutering. Our shelter vets now tend to our sick cats. We only send our cats out to vets when we cannot handle something due to our limited equipment. Hopefully, some day, we will own our own x-ray, dental, surgical & more extensive vet equipment to be able to be totally self-sufficient. Please continue to support us through your donations. Thank you for your continued support & mainly for your belief in all we do!

Spay Day USA 2008 Event…by TLC participating for the 8th year in National Spay Day back in February we recently received a special grant of $555.00 to help us with future spay/neutering of our cats. We know the answer to the overpopulation of cats & dogs is to spay, neuter, spay, neuter, spay, neuter – we can’t say this enough! Please pass this spay, neuter message on to those who don’t listen! So many don’t. For low cost spay & neutering services to help out stray cats or feral cats or those who are financially unable to pay, call 646-5577 & leave on box #4.
BEAUTY
“Tiffany’s Rainbow Bridge”…Last March of 2007 Tiffany Nealon was killed in a tragic car accident at a very young age. She was a true animal lover. In her honor her family is building a bridge over the creek on our TLC property. Work on the bridge will begin in late-May. If you wish to help rebuilt this bridge which will forever stand in Tiffany’s honor, contact us on our hotline & we can tell you when work will begin. Donations to help fund this project are most welcome.
Beauty is a 10 year old petite black and white tuxedo female that came to the shelter when her elderly owner had to move. She is a quiet, sweet little gal!
“I’ve Got Sunshine On A Cloudy Day”…Sunshine, the one-eyed orange tabby male cat found his own “sunshine” with a new forever home. A home of his very own is all this cute little stray from Springville wanted & so badly deserved. No one, let alone his new owners, could resist his sweet, & of course, sunny personality. May “Sunshine” have only sunny days ahead of him for the rest of his nine lives!
We Called him “Bust a Move Buster”. He was a stray from the West Side of Buffalo & had two surgeries to repair his knee caps. He was one tough little cat who went through so much. He was also one of our four shelter cats that had the whole building to walk around freely. You could find him on the table, in the vet office, on the couch or mainly in your face or lap. A couple fell in love with him & he is now in a forever home with another TLC cat. Sure enough they report Buster slept with them the first night – right on their face! We know Buster had to move on from the shelter life but saying goodbye to him was so hard!
HONEY SEEN KISSIN'
TOM-KAT!
SCRUFFY
TORO
As the world slowly turns in the FIV+ room we can hardly keep up with all the happenings, gossip and rumors! To recap, Citrine, the female all white part Siamese with the blue eyes left the shelter with her new family. She must be having a grand ol’ time as she has not written yet or even bothered to call! We are very sad to say that Piper, the petite all grey female who was Corky’s once love, has passed to the Rainbow Bridge after a terrible time with throat cancer. Piper is at peace now and will always be remembered by us all.
Toro, the tabby male cat, continues to be too playful for the females in that room as they already figured out he is in no way the settling down type. Will a female FIV+ captivate Toro enough to settle him down once and for all? You can find Toro at anytime sitting on the perch at the door looking out to the main shelter hallway as if to say, “I am waiting for you world – take me on”. Visitors often comment on him looking out but so many seem to think the FIV+ room is a bad thing. They need to understand this feline disease and realize it is not so scary and that FIV+ cats have a comprised immune system ONLY and can live, long healthy lives under in-side the home conditions! Even if they have other cats, as long as all the cats are non-aggressive, and not the fighting type, a FIV+ can live fine with other cats. There is even a vaccine that can help.
Tom-Kat, the husky, all muscle, no fat whatsoever, male orange tabby cat, continues to be the overall confirmed bachelor of the FIV+ room. Now with the beautiful weather you can find Tom-Kat catching the sun rays working on his tan and lounging about with the females gathered around him longingly. Since Mr. Handsome left to move onto a new, forever home, Tom-Kat has become Top-Cat! Corky, the male black and white tuxedo cat, continues to be clean and sober after a time with cat-nip. All our staff and volunteers at the shelter are very understanding of his past troubles with this addictive drug. Honey, the all black female, continues to catch Corky’s eye but they are at a “just friends” stage now the tabloids are reporting.
“Little One” came in from a Rochester shelter and has joined the FIV+ clan. He is a little fellow & will be seeing the dentist very soon to get his pearly whites back to shape. “George Clooney”, an all grey long-hair FIV+, came in as well from a Kentucky rescue. He is not camera shy at all & the paparazzi has been following him around catching his every move. A fun-loving guy who is known to party till the wee hours at the shelter, he has no enemies in the room. “Scruffy”, the recent long-hair hippie from the streets continues, no matter what we try to do, to look “unkempt” and basically “down-right scruffy” & just may prefer it that way. He is known to be sitting in groups in the FIV+ room reading poetry, quoting famous cat quotes & telling tales (not tails) of his past life.
AS THE WORLD TURNS IN THE FIV+ ROOM…

March 2008
Dear Ten Lives Club Supporter:
A new year, a new start for Ten Lives Club. Though it didn’t start out the way we thought with the attempted vandalism/break-in on January lst with someone throwing a cinder block through our front door. Though it shattered glass everywhere, it will not shatter our hopes, dreams or our resolve. Instead, we sped up our "Surveillance Campaign" which we had wanted to do all along but the money was not there. We added cameras & a monitoring system where every action is recorded in our lot & around our building. We will continue to safeguard our cats & our shelter every chance we get. Future plans include additional cameras, fencing, barred windows, locked gate to enter our parking lot & hopefully someday soon to renovate our third floor of the building & put a studio apartment where someone can live on-site. The upstairs second & third floor at one time used to be apartments so this is certainly not out of the question. Knowing the cats are safe & sound will give us peace of mind.
The Clubhouse is coming along great & everyone should be proud that WE ALL made this happen in Western New York. If you are reading this newsletter & are on our mailing list, YOU with your support, donations & kind words helped us get to this point. We would not have this shelter without everyone "holding the vision" to make this dream come true. A shelter where abandoned, stray & unwanted cats can go & live until adoption. Time will never run out at the Clubhouse for them. So many cities worldwide have such shelters & now our area has one as well. We are improving the shelter weekly with all being done, added and renovated. Volunteers all make this happen or people who visit & want to offer their help, skills and time. No one wants to see us fail as this shelter is too important & so necessary. We are making this shelter ready for the next generation who can take over someday & continue on with our dream, mission & work.
We have had "pot holes" along the road that led us here. Though with every obstacle we face we try to improve & move ahead & become better & stronger. Please bear with us until we get there. We are going through a learning curve right now trying to figure out what works & what doesn’t work as a shelter. Positive criticism can only help us as long as we learn something from it. Staying positive is hard so many times. When times are bad & when it doesn’t seem like it is getting any better, just walking around the shelter & seeing the impact we are making can brighter your mood.
To keep us going & moving ahead is our daily goal. So much is at stake to make it work as a rescue group & to keep us in business. Our dream & vision are finally realized – we own it – we just now have to maintain it & keep it running! Please continue to support us through your donations! Thank you for your continued support & mainly for your belief in all we do & stand for.

RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS SPAY & NEUTER
Goodsearch.com…don’t forget that each & every time you search the internet to use goodsearch.com & put in Ten Lives Club as your charity of choice. From 100’s of us doing so, TLC receives some very nice checks!
National Spay Day held February 26…this is TLC’s 8th year participating in this very important event. We are “walking the talk” in helping to get cats spayed & neutered thus reducing the serious pet overpopulation problem in our community. In February with the help of our two on-site vets, Dr. Kelly Czech of Eden Vet Clinic & Dr. Sharon Fisk, we were able to hold five spay/neuter clinics at our shelter. These clinics spayed & neutered over 100+ cats! Other rescue groups used our services which helped them as well take care of their cats in their program. The low cost spay/neutering services that we provide is for those finding a stray cat they wish to help or maybe keep & those needing financial assistance. We do not wish to take away from the specialized care that other veterinarians offer in our community. We hope that those utilizing the low-cost clinic realize this is for the sole reason of stopping litters from being born and that they use this service we provide as a means to help out the pet overpopulation problem only.
Muffin, the three-legged cat…Shortly after our newsletter went out, Muffin, who was featured in last month’s newsletter, was adopted into a wonderful new household that has eight other “special” needs cats. She bonded immediately with another cat in the household & is doing great with her new pal & new home. This was the “toss-away” cat that someone threw into our parking lot from a car as they drove away. Luckily, two volunteers saw this happen & responded. Her being thrown is what caused Muffin’s injury & led to her losing her leg.
Now, thanks to many of your help, we have security cameras on the premises that will help in catching these people abandon their cat(s) or vandalizing our property.
Special Tidbits we are Proud to Share… For the past few years… TLC has participated in the “Very Best Pet Network” Program (VBPN) with Purina & Wal-Mart stores. Part of the agreement was to use the Hamburg & Springville Wal-Mart stores to show our cat’s pictures & to keep them updated on the boards they provided at their stores for potential adoptions. By advertising about this program through our website, press releases, newsletters & keeping the boards updated, TLC was one of the top 25 organizations nation-wide to receive a $1,000 grant in support of our efforts. Out of hundreds of other organizations this is quite an accomplishment! Special thanks to our two volunteers, Colleen & Sue, who made sure this happened by keeping up with the program in sending in the points.
TEN LIVES CLUBHOUSE WALL PLAQUE
Please consider donating to our Wall Plaque which is located right when you enter the front entrance of our Clubhouse. Supporters donating $1,000 or more will be recognized with their name or a message being engraved on the plaque. The plates are filling up & we sincerely thank all that have already donated to help us out with the expenses of starting up this shelter. Since we purchased this building we needed to purchase a boiler, linoleum, dry wall, doors, windows, alarm system, cameras, hot water tank, propane heaters, plumbing installation, heating supplies, etc. Most all of these expenses are one-time only expenses & won’t have to be replaced for many, many years to come.
“Mark Your Territory” at our shelter by remembering a loved one, a beloved pet, leave a namesake, leave your mark for others to read years from now. Individuals, businesses & companies all welcome!
I would like to be part of the Ten Lives Club Wall Plaque at the Shelter.

We wish to give special thanks to Steven’s Remodeling of Orchard Park whose business made & painted & then put up over 80 boxes & shelves for 12 rooms in our Clubhouse. Ray Steven’s & his staff came in for one full day at the shelter during a wintry day & really enjoyed interacting with all the cats as they worked. At around 10:00 pm nightly our cats get the “Cat Craxies” & it is hilarious to watch them chase each other from shelf to shelf & around the whole room. Thank you “Uncle Ray” & friends for making this happen!
Introducing…Jolene Hawkins of Springville! For many years now, Jolene has been hand-making crocheted blankets for the cats of TLC. Watching her work and talk at the same time is amazing in itself. So many of the cats in our program have curled up on her blankets whether at our cages we own at the pet stores we show our cats, in foster homes or at our shelter. Some of you may have even bought her blankets at our events for your own pets. Pictured is Jolene with “Cinnamon” who would not let her work that afternoon and instead wanted to cuddle!
We have 15 rooms to heat in our shelter and we all know “it ain’t cheap!
Quilt Raffle…one of our supporters, Nancy Hoyler from Boston, NY made a beautiful cat quilt that everyone just loved! She sold chances at most every TLC fundraiser for a few months to help us raise monies. The winner of the cat quilt was Cheri Henning of Colden. A big thanks to Nancy who raised $546.00 for TLC by her quilting efforts. Pictured is Nancy & her husband.
Baby It’s Cold Out there…
And warm in our shelter! Before we had our propane heaters installed we were using electric heaters in most of our rooms. When we received our electric bill in January we almost flipped & it was not flips of joy. Our electric bill was $2,800 to heat the building as the heaters really drained us! Since the propane heaters have been installed in early December we are filling our propane tank every 5 weeks costing us $1100.00 a refill. We are on our third refill and hopefully Spring will save us soon. Your donations help us “warm their paws” until winter passes in WNY.
Happy 8th Birthday to Joseph of West Seneca!!!
What a big heart Joseph had when celebrating his 8th birthday. Instead of birthday gifts for himself, he asked his friends to get gifts and items for the Ten Lives Club cats at our shelter. Joseph and his family showed up at our shelter with tons of supplies, food, litter and things for the cats. Joseph is surely a special person as last year he helped out the Relay for Life organization with their fundraising. Pictured is his sister Emily and Joseph, the birthday boy, holding up some of the presents the cats received thanks to Joseph.
Advertise your business on our website. Ten Livesclub.com gets hundreds of hits daily of those checking us out. We will put your business or ad on our site for 6 months or 12 months for a small donation. The donation money helps us to pay our website costs and keep our site running! Please contact us at 646-5577 if you are interested in placing a link or an ad on our Ad Page.
Low Cost Spay and Neuter Assistance contact TLC at 716 646-5577 $75 includes spay or neuter, rabies & distemper vaccine
To All who are considering using this LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER SERVICE…
Please understand it is the intent of this Ten Lives Club sponsored Spay/Neuter Clinic to provide this important service to people who cannot afford to take their pet, feral cat(s) or stray cat to a commercial veterinary practice. It is Ten Lives Club intent to offer the basic spay/neutering, rabies and distemper shot only to each cat(s) that comes to our clinic. We are not a veterinarian office and do not offer other services. Should you wish extra veterinary care or to speak to the veterinarian about other issues regarding the health or behavior of a cat, you will need to go to your own personal vet. We can certainly refer you to some of our affiliated veterinarians that we work with. We do not offer personal vet services, just spay/neuter and vaccines at a low cost price. Please understand this before you contact us about an appointment.
This clinic is for basic spay/neutering/rabies and distemper vaccines only. This is Ten Lives Club way to utilize these clinics as an inexpensive mechanism to sterilize stray, feral(s) and personal pets whose owners may be financially in need. If you have the financial means to pay for full and other veterinary services and care, we ask you to please do so and do not use this limited service. Let this Spay/Neuter clinic continue to be utilized by those in need who may have stray or feral cats and are trying to help the serious overpopulation problem we are facing in our community. Please respect this clinic and its intent. You may call our hotline to find out about future spay/neuter clinics.
GIFT IDEAS…TLC Gift Certificates are now available. Can be used at any of our various fundraising events to purchase items, crafts, raffle tickets or to pay for dinners. Call 646-5577 if you wish to order in $10.00 amounts. Cannot be used to adopt a cat.
PRINT CARTRIDGE & CELL PHONE RECYCLING FUNDRAISER…
We are collecting print cartridges and cell phones at our shelter and at any of our various fundraisers coming up. Make sure to collect them at home and work for us to turn in for some much needed cash. We are doing quite well with this fundraiser!
Phyllis Krathouse…TLC lost one of our loyal volunteers in early December to sickness. Phyllis called TLC for help with a little cat she found as a stray and she then continued to work with us as a volunteer. She did cat adoption shows at our stores, helped clean cages, transported cats and helped at fundraising events. We know when she crossed the Rainbow Bridge she was welcomed by many of the cats she helped save. Rest in peace dear Phyllis and know you are missed by many.
Hospira Employee Giving Campaign
National Fuel Gas Company Foundation
Ten Lives Club is now eligible to receive donations from the two businesses listed above. If you are an employee of these companies, please consider pledging an amount through payroll deductions. Thanks to those employees who already give. Contact your payroll dept. if you wish to contribute.
Breeder Rescue…in late December we did a rescue from a breeder in WNY. These cats came to us in very sad shape. The nine cats we took in were not eligible for “show” or “breeder” standards so they were not tended to like they should have been by any responsible pet owner. The cats all needed vaccines & to be neutered & spayed & some had to be put on meds immediately due to sickness. Michael, a 5 year old male, used for breeding purposes, is still one of the sickest cats. He is a sweet Maine Coone little man that would just melt your heart. These cats were kept in cages most of their life so to come to TLC and be “free” was a new, happy experience. Watching them blossom is breathtaking!
Our Lobby…we always have items to sell in our main lobby of the shelter. If you have any hand-made items or new things for us to sell, bring them on down! Every bit helps our cause!
Fall Raffle Winners…many of you purchased our fall raffle tickets where we had 10 great prizes. This raffle raised TLC over $7,000 – the best ever! Top three winners: 1st prize - lap top computer - Terry Broniszewski of Buffalo, 2nd prize -$250 gift certificate won by Alberta Fracoccia of Buffalo, 3rd prize - $100 gift certificate won by Bonnie Sunday of Hamburg. We are looking for donations of items of high value to be used in our next fall raffle which we are getting ready for soon. Call 646-5577 ASAP if you can donate any big name items or gift certificates.
THANK YOU!
United Way of Buffalo & Erie County…a big thank you to all who contributed to United Way in 2007 & had Ten Lives Club as their designated donor of choice. We are part of the United Way through our “Senior Kitty” program matching senior citizens in our community with older cats (five years & older) in our program. Since our start in 2001, over 500+ cats have been adopted into senior homes. Through your United Way donations, Ten Lives Club received over $3,000 in contributions.
WAY TO GO PEOPLE!!!
Citrine, the beautiful all white FIV+ female with the blue eyes was seen around town dining out on her own. On-lookers noted she was eating a lot of food from a huge bowl. Wicked cat tongues wonder if she is eating for two? Silly them, we know better at the shelter. Her agent had no comment.

Corky, who was seen around town with Piper, the Southern FIV+ grey belle, is now single once again and playing the field. Rumor has it that he broke Piper’s heart. Recently out of rehab (the vet’s office) himself, Corky continues to stay clean and sober. Always keeping his true feelings penned up, his FIV+ buddies and old flames were quite worried about him. He is one mellow cat and very healthy. Corky does laps around the room to keep in shape and is seen at times tossing a ball around for sport. Corky continues to look dashing in his black and white fur tuxedo attire. Stay tuned for next month’s update…will Corky stay clean or will he relapse into his old lifestyle? Will he be single when we revisit again? What about the all black female “Honey” in the FIV+ room. Little shy they say about her.
Tom-Kat, the husky orange male, was seen leaving the FIV scene late in the evening after a night of howling & yowling at the moon by the creek windows. Tom-Kat seems to be the confirmed bachelor. Many have been charmed by him, but no one can settle him down. May that someday change???
BFF…Best Friend Forever spotted in the FIV+ room, Mr. Kitty, the white & grey male & Logan, the all black male, have been best of buddies lately. They’ve been noted taking long cat-naps soaking up the sun & chatting quietly amongst themselves. This could only mean one thing, they are plotting something. Stay tuned for next month, is something brewing or stewing in the FIV+ room?
Piper, the petite grey belle, was reportedly shocked when Corky dumped her.
In the FIV+ room, there never seems to be a dull moment. The residents can be friends one day and then total enemies the next day. A few months have passed since the last report on the FIV+ room. To recap, Edith Anne, the curvaceous tortie was in rehab and is now back at the shelter doing fine. We were a little worried about her but after a nip and a tuck she is totally in wonderful spirits and back to her ol’ catty self. Mr. Handsome with his unusually large head moved onto the real world and into a forever home. Tom Kat, the muscular male of the FIV+ room, never liked Mr. Handsome and was heard to meow loudly, “Don’t let the door kick you in the behind."
